I have shared with you before my passion for motivation and engagement of your team.

Have you ever considered personalising your employee motivation tactics? Whilst we know all staff expect to be paid a reasonable salary for the work they do, some are motivated by pay increases and bonuses, and some are not.

As employers get a better understanding of what employee motivation entails, some interesting alternatives to cold hard cash have emerged:

Award and points schemes
Discounts with retail groups – often this forms part of company wide staff benefit schemes
Gifts – we’ve heard of beauty treatments, spa days, motor experiences and track days for example
Travel perks including free car parking, having an “elite space” in the company car park, having the boss’s car for the day
Additional days off
Recognition awards

Employee motivation doesn’t need to be difficult.

The trick to making these incentives work, is to ensure they fit with the employee. Rewarding an employee for superb performance over the year with an expectation of being in the limelight to receive an award, is really uncomfortable if that individual is shy and embarrassed in the spotlight.

Giving a member of staff additional days off when they don’t take all their holiday entitlement, is unlikely to be seen as much of an incentive.

So, focus on getting to know your team and what will work for them. The more you are able to personalise the incentive, the more each person will feel valued. The “prize” will say that you care about them as individuals and really appreciate what they have achieved.
