In my last post we discussed the importance of recruiting for a cultural fit.

But how do you go about achieving that?

If we look at some of the big boys – Google, Apple, Amazon, Nike – they attract talent because they are seen as cool brands. They are innovators and leaders, there is excitement about their brand and many want to be part of that.

Of course, we don’t all have the budget, or the reach, that these global companies have, but we can emulate their success in our businesses.

Having a team that are both motivated and engaged is definitely the foundation to this success. Your people will talk enthusiastically about working for you – and frankly that is the best recruitment advert you could get.

Paring back to basics, you need to really evaluate whether the vision you have articulated internally about your business and your team, is reflected in reality.

Do you really treat your staff in the best way possible?

What can you do to make the workplace a fun, interesting and exciting place to be, without losing sight of the work that needs to be done?

You also need to ensure all the messages seen by the outside world cement your internal values, as well as the marketing messages. Social media, your website, any press comments etc – do they support the belief that your company is the one to work for?

In essence, by establishing and building a strong internal culture wrapped around your team, any candidates considering working for your business, will self select.

In other words, if they like what they see and hear, and can imagine themselves fitting into your business, they will apply.

Of course, you will need to ensure your recruitment processes are robust enough to establish if they are a good fit – but that’s exciting stuff.
