Are you an introvert or an extrovert? It could significantly affect your career.

We have talked before about the challenges of managing the more introverted members of your team. Interestingly, a recent survey by Truity Psychometrics has identified your personality type can significantly effect your career.

This study is focused on the Myers Briggs 16 personality types, so if you are not familiar with them, you may find this infographic helpful: https://careerassessmentsite.com/mbti-personality-types-socioeconomic-infographic/. There are also in depth descriptions of each type on the Truity website: http://www.truity.com/view/types.

In summary, the eight personality types starting with a letter E are more extroverted, but then have additional traits which dictate the way they behave and the way others seem them.

What did the study establish?

  • Extroverted personality types tend to have higher incomes – the average income is double that of more introverted people
  • Extroverts manage larger teams – this comes as no surprise, as introverted people often feel uncomfortable in management roles
  • Team players perform better – specifically people who put the needs of a group or department over their own needs
  • Introverted people are less satisfied with their jobs than their extroverted counterparts
  • Pay differential between men and women – this was looked at from a personality perspective, but is an on going challenge in the work place

What does this mean for you?

  • Be sure you are not overlooking your introverted employees
  • Make sure you are promoting people because they have the most relevant skills, not a more dominant personality
  • Evaluate your pay process to ensure it is transparent and fair for all staff
  • Run a job satisfaction survey and then analyse the common threads in the results
