Walk to work? Isn’t it challenging enough for us all to get to work on time even when we rely on our cars or public transport? Surely unless you live right on the office doorstep, the thought of not being able to hit the snooze button even once and all the extra rushing around to give us that extra time is enough to put off even the most hardy amongst us.
National Walk To Work Day takes place this Friday 6th April
But it does gives us all a chance to change routine, if only for a day, and even have a bit of fun with our colleagues on the way.
If you’re anything like me, I’ve become increasingly aware of the amount of time I spend sedentary at my desk – so much so that I invested in an adjustable computer riser which encourages me to stand at my computer, rather than sit, at various times throughout the day.
I’ve definitely felt the benefit of spending more time on my feet, but it doesn’t give me the opportunity to get out in the fresh air and greet the day in something less than a rush! In a world where we so often forget that there’s more to life than working and sleeping, this extra time can help us take time to appreciate the things we usually miss. Whether it’s the sun on our skin (or let’s be honest, more likely rain – or snow!) or just fresh air, Walk to Work Day helps to reconnect us with our environment in some very important ways.
Get the whole team involved in Walk to Work Day
It’s the perfect opportunity to get the whole team involved, so even if you have employees coming from all different directions, set the alarm half an hour early, agree to meet your colleagues in a mutually convenient location a reasonable distance from the office – a café is perfect – and get yourself out in the fresh air and join the rest of the country on National Walk To Work Day.
A nice touch for the team on arrival to the office is a light breakfast and the chance for your colleagues to connect and chat about the different morning routine.
Of course, if the weather turns out to be anything like the Siberian chill we’ve had recently, you might want to pick a more spring-like day – but the most important thing to remember is to swap your office shoes for something more outdoor-appropriate and get yourselves out there!
