You hear a lot about “Startups” in the digital sphere.
The market is completely saturated with resources for “how to’s” and general advice for entrepreneurs starting out on their own.
But what about once you have passed the “start up” stage and you have started to grow?
One thing I have learned as the MD of a growing business, is that your people are your greatest asset. We mention this on our website over and over again. We like to turn your people into your greatest strength, and that’s because I genuinely believe it.
The other thing we mention a lot is that the people side of your business is arguably the hardest…
This is why culture is such an important aspect of business growth. You need everyone working together in harmony if things are going to work and you can’t have that balance upset.
Therefore, at the very start of your interview process, you should be considering how they will influence your company culture, whether they share your company values, and whether they will be able to champion those values on your behalf.
A good practise is to have your candidate meet with various members of the team. This will not only give them a flavour of the company culture as a whole but also help you to spot whether they are going to fit well with the whole team.
With all that said, you also need to make sure that you embrace your new talent and allow them to impact your company culture in positive ways. It is easy to get stuck in your ways and force your new talent to reshape themselves to fit you and you will miss out on all of the juicey new flavours that they might have brought to the table.
Once your team starts to grow, you will also need to start thinking more strategically about your leaders and organisational structure.
It might be tempting to do everything yourself the way you like it but you will quickly burn out. Share your responsibilities and empower your managers so that you can also take a needed step back from the day to day and start focussing more on your businesses growth.
Accepting help when you need it will only make you stronger.
