Psychometric tests are most commonly associated with recruitment and senior level at that.

Not to be confused with competency based testing, which identifies whether candidates have particular skills, psychometric testing looks at personality traits.

Good testing goes a step further and predicts what behaviours individuals are likely to exhibit in certain scenarios.

They certainly are very powerful and can be very effective when helping to make recruitment decisions. In fact, many companies are now using psychometric tests for all employees, not just executive level.

Savvy businesses recognise getting the right cultural fit and finding your shining stars of the future is far more important than ticking off a list of qualifications.

But don’t just think of psychometric tests as a recruitment tool. They are a great way to develop your existing team too.

Using the results, you can put together individual development plans to help employees strengthen their skills. Tests can help you identify future leaders too – and believe us the results can be surprising!

So think of these tests as a very supportive management tool, for planning your resourcing, identify skills that are missing in your team, as well as succession planning and management development.

By now, you may well be thinking this is all too good to be true…

And you’re right, there are some caveats:

  • Choosing the right test is the first challenge – there are plenty to choose from, but they are not all the same, and you need to get the right one for you
  • Budget – you need to allocate additional funding to running the testing, but against that I would argue the cost of getting recruitment wrong alone, would easily exceed testing costs
  • Training – you know the saying a little knowledge is a dangerous thing? Well, in the world of psychometric tests that’s certainly true. You really need to be trained in how to interpret the test results, and the ability to give constructive feedback to team members too.

So, are they worth it? Yes, we think, in the right hands, they are.
