We have talked before about preparing adequately for recruiting, and never is that more important than at the interview stage. Whilst it is vital to ensure that everything is in place to reflect the company in the best light, it can be about so much more…
In a recent article for LinkedIn, ex Dragon’s Den star James Caan, wrote about the importance of prospective employees asking questions. In fact, he even went so far as to recommend they ask as many questions as you do!
We all expect candidates to come prepared, having done some research on your business, and having appropriate answers for questions they believe they are likely to be asked.
But how prepared are you for some of the questions James has suggested?
- Qualities you are looking for – a good robust person specification and job description should help you to answer this. Highlight the most vital aspects so you can pick them out quickly if necessary.
- Personal development – whilst you will know the answer to this, it is great if you can give some examples, so jot down training or career advancement opportunities you have given to other employees
What about other tricky questions?
- Company strengths – whilst you probably know these, have a note of those you are most proud of, ready to share
- Weaknesses – be careful here as you may decide not to appoint this individual, and you need to be wise about what will get shared. However, this is a great opportunity to turn this question around, by admitting a need for this role to be filled to reduce an area of concern
Of course, there is no end to what could be asked, but above all don’t panic. If you don’t know the answer you should say so, and commit to getting back to the candidate with an answer.
Equally, you don’t have to answer a question you feel is inappropriate – but I have to say I have yet to hear a question that bad!
Remember – recruitment is a two way process – you want to choose the best candidate, and you want them to choose you.
