You know the old saying about finding something valuable when you are not looking for it…

Well, that is just as relevant in recruitment as it is anywhere else.

What do you do when you come across somebody who has impressive skills? Somebody who appears to be a great fit for your business?

In most instances companies write a polite refusal – thank you but we don’t have any vacancies and we will keep you on file. The trouble is that’s where it ends.

But you could handle it slightly differently.

If you had already got your HR plan in place, and knew how you wanted to take the business forward, you could easily see if there was a place for this dynamic individual in your organisation. Budget allowing, there may be no time like the present.

Equally, how often do you remember to go back and look at quality applications and CVs you have received, that you promised you would contact if a role came up? I am guessing probably not often.

This is such a missed opportunity. Agreed, they may well have gone elsewhere, but nothing ventured nothing gained.

Of course, much of this rests on you knowing the kind of person who would make a good fit, and having your HR plan in place.
