Sometimes you may feel you would be an awful lot more productive if you didn’t get sucked into all the people “stuff”.

I know – that’s not something you expect an HR professional to say!

But I do recognise that people can be hugely draining and time consuming. And yet, they remain the lifeblood of your business, and imperative to your success.

Part of managing this well is recognising that the higher up the ladder you go, or the bigger your business becomes, the more time managing people will take.

You will need to delegate more and more, and do that effectively.

That means you will end up doing far less “doing” and far more managing.

The chances are your business is made up of a number of individuals who have different personality types.

Some are the glory hunters that are good at closing the big deals, or making a big impact – typically not detail orientated they require managing in a certain way.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, are the quiet plodders – just getting on with the task at hand, doing things effectively – but never stepping out of their comfort zone or speaking up. Again they too need managing, but in an entirely different way.

In between those two extremes you have a number of other personalities. And whilst it would not be appropriate to treat anyone more favourably than the rest, it is entirely appropriate for you to work out the best way to manage everyone.

The way you tackle issues, motivate individuals, encourage and develop your team will be different for each individual.

The secret to reducing the juggling is to understand each individual and know how to get the best out of each of them.
