I wrote a post a few days ago about wasted time at work due to unproductive meetings and gave you some tips on how to make meetings more effective.
Following on from that, I want to talk to you about how you can be more productive when you have a lot of meetings spread throughout the day.
- Manage your calendar – If you have something critical that needs all of your attention, block the time out on your calendar. This is a really quick and simple way to let the team know you cannot attend meetings during this time.
- Have a no meeting day – Allocate one day a week that does not have any scheduled meetings. This can help your team to manage their time and have a day when they can really get in the zone.
- Say no – If you are getting bogged down and think a meeting might be a waste of your time, politely ask if it is really necessary that you attend. eHow even has an article on how to do this!
- Use to-do lists – if you have a lot of 15 – 30 minute slots across the day, plan out exactly what you need to do during those times to make sure you still get things done.
- Get work done during the meeting – Assign tasks, set deadlines, and make sure that you have delegated everything you need to do so can concentrate on other things.
- Get some training – Management training could be just what you need to help you get in control of your hectic schedule and to organise your team.

Our client, Optimus Patents, required some management training. Tony Wray said:
“Frankly, I would describe Reality HR as an absolute godsend. They have a lot of experience, not just in HR, and that has enabled them to help us function better as an organisation without wasting time. They are very hands-on, proactive and a pleasure to work with. I would say to any other business owner – if you have a legal issue you would go to a solicitor, if you need to file your tax return you go to an accountant, so when you employ people you need an HR consultant. Any business that doesn’t have a dedicated HR resource, should definitely look to outsource their HR. I have peace of mind knowing that my business can operate effectively because any HR issues are being managed properly.”
